Swim Little Fishy

My first graders loved making clay fish.


They used a pin tool to carefully cut out the shape of their fish. They cleaned off the "clay boogers" by dipping their fingers in water and tracing the outline of the fish with the wet finger. We used additive techniques to add the eye and a stripe that divided the head from the body. We use old tooth brushes to scratch and score the clay and add the slip. To add the texture they use the eraser end of pencils for polka dots and craft sticks for the scales.

For the glaze I had them use Stroke and Coat. I placed one color and 4 brushes at each table. I have 6 tables in my room each one is a primary or secondary color. I let the students carry their fish from one table to another to glaze their fish. If one table was full they could move to another "glazing station" and paint a different color and then go back when there was an open spot at the "glazing station" .

Piggies

My Kindergartners made these muddy piggies after I read the book "The Naughtiest Piglet" By Julia Hubery http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-naughtiest-piglet-julia-hubery/1008385791

First we drew the shapes of the pig with a q-tip dipped in black paint.

We let the black paint dry and painted the other colors during the next class period.

Students find the center point on a square piece of paper.


Then they make 1 inch marks along the lines and connect them in symmetrical ways to create their designs

Nutcrackers

I showed my 4th graders how to draw the simple shapes that make up the nutcrackers. Then I asked them to decorate the nutcrackers they drew by adding their own details. We talked about the element of design, value and how it makes things in art work look "real". I showed them techniques that they could use with oil pastels to create value in their art work.

Tooth Fairy

My First graders are loosing their teeth at an epic rate. After reading "Alice the Fairy" by David Shannon ,we decided to make our own tooth fairies.

We used ink pens to draw our fairies, painted them with watercolors, than added our own fairy dust (glitter). They were so excited about the glitter!!

2nd Grade Dragons

My second graders read the Dragon books in their classrooms. They were very excited to learn how to draw one of their favorite characters.
